Step Up
The AMA is a national organisation that supports arts managers and marketers working in any artform, and at any level. Our 1850 members come from galleries, museums, theatres, arts centres, cinemas and performing companies from all over the country. They all have an interest in persuading the public to experience the arts.

We provide seminars, workshops, conferences and a mentoring scheme. We produce books, reports, a quarterly journal and a monthly e-mail bulletin. We will also try to answer any question from any member on any aspect of arts marketing and management!

What is Step Up?

Step Up is a coaching scheme based in London, Birmingham and Cambridge for people working in arts marketing and arts management (arts professionals). It is open to anyone working in the UK, but priority will be given to Black and Asian arts professionals. The AMA is delivering Step Up as part of the Creative Renewal Development Partnership co-ordinated by Metier, the national training organisation of the arts and entertainment sector. Creative Renewal is a programme promoted by Metier to make the arts and entertainment sector more representative of society as a whole. The programme includes research projects aimed at helping the sector understand what the barriers to entering the sector are and pilot programmes that will increase the opportunities available for people working in the arts, entertainment and media sectors.

If you join the scheme, you will become a ‘learner’. You will work with your coach from October 2004 to March 2005. You will meet with them four times on a one-to-one over this period. Each session lasts 90 minutes.
  • Your coach helps you identify goals – and then works with you to achieve them
  • Your coach is there for you, providing support and learning in a safe environment
  • You and three of your colleagues will receive free membership of the AMA for a year – a great way to support your learning and networking in the arts
The evaluation for round 1 has just been completed and all the measures of success set at the start of the scheme have been exceeded. 100% of learners expressed a range of positive outcomes and many of the learners attributed the coaching process to a direct and often drastic improvement in their work/career and personal life. Here are just a few of the many positive comments made by learners who completed round 1 of the scheme:

The scheme was far more useful than I ever expected, with a much longer-term focus on my life and career.

The practical changes and ways of working that coaching has taught me have been taken up by my colleagues too.

I realised that I can do things and others are not better than me. Before being coached I thought I 'might', now I know I can.

A wonderful scheme of which I am happy to be an advocate. Coaching has given me the confidence and ability to be a professional.

Who can Step Up?

Step Up is open to any arts professional working in the UK. You can read about the five coaches on the next page – you will see that there are coaches with a broad range of experiences in arts marketing, press and management.

There are 20 places and priority will be given to Black and Asian arts professionals.

What will it cost?

As the AMA is delivering the scheme as part of the Creative Renewal Development Partnership it is part funded by the European Social Fund under the EQUAL Community Initiative Programme. The scheme is also funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. This means that it is free to participate – you just need to be able to get to your coaching meeting in Birmingham, Cambridge or London. You will be required to sign a ‘beneficiary form’ for each session. This is a funding requirement to prove that you have given your time to the scheme.

What is the process?

Annabel receives all application forms and assesses them according to the criteria published at the bottom of the application form. Annabel then matches learners to coaches and goes through this with each coach. All applicants will be contacted by 18th October. Coaches and learners set up their four meetings between themselves, and all meetings must have taken place by 31st March 2005 to be funded by the scheme. Annabel will contact learners before they start for some baseline evaluation, and at the end of the scheme to complete the evaluation process.
