Mentoring scheme
The AMA's mentoring scheme began in April 2000. Many AMA members had requested a mentoring scheme over the years, and following some qualitative research, the AMA set up a pilot, funded by the Arts Council of England, the Arts Council of Wales and the Scottish Arts Council.

The AMA devoted considerable resources to the training of mentors and mentees. We have found that there is a direct link between trained participants and successful mentoring relationships. For this reason, you can only join the scheme if you agree to participate in the training scheme. Pam Henderson will deliver the training.

Information pack
The information included in this document should be read through carefully.

Training day
  • This day-long event (10.30am – 4.00pm) focuses on giving you the skills to get the most out of your mentoring sessions. There is some theory, but most of the day is spent on practical exercises. You are then invited to commit to the scheme.
  • Please note that places on training days are limited and bookings will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Matching mentors and mentees
  • The AMA pairs up mentors and mentees following telephone conversations with mentees. The aim of this process is to pair up a mentee with a mentor who can help the mentee fulfil their development objectives. Both the mentor and mentee have an input into this process. The relationship only starts if both the mentor and mentee are happy for it to do so.
  • We aim to pair up everyone who commits to participate in the mentoring programme. However, previous schemes have shown that it's better not to pair somebody up than to match them inappropriately.

Costs

New prospective mentors and mentees:
In order to participate in the scheme, all prospective mentors and mentees must attend the training day. The cost to AMA members to attend the training day is £75 + VAT. In addition, once mentees are matched they will be charged a one-off administration fee of £50. The administration fee will not be charged if no suitable match can be found. We also request that participants ensure that they are up to date with their AMA subscription at all times.

Re-matching:
If as a mentee you have already enjoyed a successful mentoring relationship, but are interested in being re-matched in a new mentoring relationship, then you can apply to be re-matched. There is a one-off administration cost of £50 for this service.

Mentees re-training to be mentors:
If you have already participated in the scheme as a mentee but would like to re-train to become a mentor, you may be able to take advantage of a reduced rate to attend the training day. Please contact Katherine Dimsdale for further information at katherine@a-m-a.co.uk

On-going support and evaluation

On-going support for participants on the scheme will be provided in the form of an official evaluation procedure, a contact point at the AMA, web support and occasional training events:

Evaluation:
The AMA mentoring scheme has two main objectives:
  • To provide and maintain an effective mentoring scheme for AMA members.
  • To test to what extent mentoring can achieve the same results as one-to-one coaching (as developed through the Step Up coaching scheme).
In keeping with these objectives, the AMA will be piloting a new on-line evaluation tool, Mentoring Dynamics Survey Online (MDS Online) from October 2007, which will enable the AMA to benchmark their results against those of other organisations.
What is MDS Online?
MDS Online measures mentor and mentee perceptions of the relationship at three key points by asking a set of validated questions.
  • At the beginning of the relationship – to establish expectations of behaviours and benefits, relationship commitment and perceptions of organisational support to mentoring.
  • At mid-term – to identify behaviours, relationship quality and satisfaction
  • On completion of the relationship – to establish outcomes for both mentors and mentees.
Participants on the scheme will be sent an e-mail with log-in instructions at each stage of the evaluation process, in order to complete the relevant survey. If you have any questions or concerns about the evaluation of the scheme, please contact annabel@a-m-a.co.uk or call the AMA office on 01223 578078.

Contact point at the AMA
Participants on the scheme can contact the mentoring scheme co-ordinator (Katherine Dimsdale) and she will be happy to discuss any problems or concerns you may have concerning the scheme and your match, including our delivery of the scheme, at any point, not only through the planned channel of evaluation. Katherine can be contacted at the AMA office on 01223 578078) or at katherine@a-m-a.co.uk

Web support
All the materials provided during the training day can be downloaded from the AMA website. You can also download evaluation results and follow some useful links to other appropriate sites.

Training events
One-off training events will be held to support the on-going learning of participants on the scheme. A half-day event for mentors only, focusing on building mentoring skills is taking place on January 29, 2008. Contact annabel@a-m-a.co.uk for more information or to book a place.

If you have any further questions or queries about the scheme, please contact the mentoring scheme co-ordinator, Katherine Dimsdale on 01223 578078 or by e-mail: katherine@a-m-a.co.uk

Mentoring in Action is a really easy read and gives a good overview of the mentoring process. David Clutterbuck is generally considered to be the ‘greatest’ authority on mentoring. His 1985 text Everyone Needs a Mentor is probably the best text to obtain a greater insight into mentoring.
