CultureHive Small Scale Development Programme Case Study

Christine Davis, Centre Manager, The Architecture Centre, Bristol

I was first interested in the Small Scale Development Programme as I saw it as a great opportunity for me to develop my marketing skills as, at the time, we had no in-house marketing expertise on our team. But the programme turned out to be much more than that, with its focus on the bigger picture of organisational development, looking beyond everyday detail.

The programme shifted my thinking, and I came to understand that marketing is the end product of vision and mission. In small organisations with multi-tasking teams, it can be especially difficult to make space to step back and ask ourselves the fundamental questions. The course was an eye-opener that has inspired me to cut through to what really matters, while also providing some very practical tools that we have already started to use to help our business planning, evaluation and audience development.

Insights from trainers and peers helped me reframe my organisation’s vision and purpose. Our priorities are now to increase the depth of audience engagement with The Architecture Centre and expand audience diversity, while we continue to extend our work championing better buildings and places for everyone. A marketing manager will soon join the team after I successfully made the case to our board, and we are about to start work on a new visual identity and website, that will better communicate our mission and impact, to launch early next year.
