The AMA headed north earlier this month, as we brought our extremely popular Video Marketing workshop to Edinburgh, led by blogger and social technologist Christian Payne. An audience of enthusiastic arts marketers, designers and freelancers gathered at Dovecot Studios for this sold-out event, and enjoyed a hugely enjoyable day packed with practical skills and advice.

The morning was spent looking at why video has become so important on the web, an overview of the equipment available, and how to plan and record your own videos.  Christian also shared some tips on increasing the chances of achieving the holy grail of online marketing – a video gone viral.
Tools recommended by Christian during the workshop included Bambuser, for live-streaming from a smartphone, and Keek, for sharing short video updates to social media.  The value of being open with your content online was emphasised: allowing your videos – and, consequently, your organisation’s message – to be shared and embeded anywhere.

In the afternoon, participants were sent out onto the streets of Edinburgh to create their own short films. While some areas of the venue were found to be off-limits to our camera teams – a valuable lesson in gaining permission to record – a contingent of delegates from National Museums Scotland expressly gave permission to film on their premises.

Consequently, the resulting videos included a spoof report filmed on location in the museum’s Natural History section, as well as interviews with local residents about Freshers’ Week, and a short film about first dates. They were all of a very high standard, given the limited time the groups had, and suggest we will be seeing more impressive video marketing coming from arts organisations in the future.

You can see one of the videos from the day below, which we have been kindly allowed to share by the creators, Nate Leslie (of Dance Base), Sarah Smith and Katrina Moohan (both from YDance).

It was a long but fulfilling day, with heaps of knowledge imparted by an extremely enthusiastic and hands-on presenter, and we’re sure this workshop series has had a positive impact in giving participants the tools and confidence to go out and make brilliant videos.z
